how to get a Driving License in singapore?

Updated: Feb 13

Turning 18 is an exciting milestone that marks a newfound sense of independence and freedom for many young adults. One of the most common goals for teens in Singapore upon turning 18 is obtaining a driver's license. With a driver's license, you can enjoy the freedom and convenience of driving anywhere you want in your own vehicle.

If you're wondering how and where to get started on your journey to getting a driving license in Singapore, the first step is to take the Basic Theory Test. There are three test centers in Singapore where you can take this test:

  1. Singapore Safety Driving Centre, located in the north of Singapore (website: https://ssdcl.com.sg/; address: 2 Woodlands Industrial Park E4, Singapore 757387)

  2. Bukit Batok Driving Centre Ltd, located in the west of Singapore (website: https://info.bbdc.sg/; address: 815 Bukit Batok West Ave. 5, Singapore 659085)

  3. ComfortDelGro Driving Centre (website: https://www.cdc.com.sg/; address: 205 Ubi Ave 4, Singapore 408805)

After booking your Basic Theory Test at one of these test centers, you'll need to pass the test by correctly answering 45 out of 50 multiple-choice questions, or scoring at least 90% of the total test result. It's essential to study hard for this test to increase your chances of passing.

On the day of the test, you'll need to report to the test center, where you'll be ushered into the computer room and verified as a test taker before beginning the test. The result will be displayed immediately after you submit all your answers, so make sure to be well-prepared.

Once you pass the Basic Theory Test, you can apply for a Provisional Driving License (PDL) and begin taking practical driving lessons. A PDL allows you to drive under the provision of a certified instructor. If you're looking for a private driving instructor platform to connect you with a certified instructor, check out Sgdrivinginstructors.

By finding a private driving instructor, you can save money and time, as there are no minimum number of lessons to attend, and you can attempt the final practical Traffic Police Test once you're ready and can drive confidently. In contrast, test centers have a minimum number of lessons to finish and attend, and you'll likely have to wait for an average of three months per lesson.

While taking driving lessons, you can also apply for the Final Theory Test, the second and final theory test you'll need to pass. This test consists of 50 MCQ questions, and you must score at least 90% or 45 out of 50 to pass. Once you've passed this test, you'll be ready to take the final practical test, the Traffic Police (TP) test.

To take the TP test, your instructor will book it for you once you've mastered driving well. During the test, the Traffic Police officer will sit next to you, and you'll need to complete the circuit at the test center and drive outside along the test routes. It's important not to get 20 demerit points or break any automatic failure rules, as doing so will result in failing the test and having to retake it.

At Sgdrivinginstructors, all of our instructors are Traffic Police certified, authorized, and licensed with a minimum of 35 years of experience, so you're in good hands. We'll help you with all aspects of the process, including the theory tests, supplying study materials and practice papers, assisting with applying for the required learner's provisional driving license.
